About The Brain Physio

Hi, I'm Monique.

Monique Davies, neurological physiotherapist, smiling outdoors
10+ yearsin neurological rehabilitation

I'm a neurological physiotherapist and brain health consultant with over a decade of experience in hospitals across Australia and the UK, private practice and community care.

Today I focus on what I’m most passionate about:

  • Helping people with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) understand and retrain their nervous system, and move onto a recovery pathway, however long they’ve had it
  • Helping people understand and optimise their brain health, so they can live a long and healthy life
  • Showing people how preventable many common neurological conditions are
  • Advocating for better FND care in Australia

I want to help people understand their brain and nervous system, so they can make the most of their strengths and live the best life they can.

The Brain Physio

Monique’s journey

From a stroke unit in Perth to FND and brain health education by telehealth.

2014

Graduated in physiotherapy

Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) with Distinction, Curtin University.

2015

A stroke unit in Perth

In my first year working, I worked alongside a neurologist with a real passion for FND. She showed me how misunderstood people with FND had been, how rewarding it is to work with them, and that they can make a full recovery. That’s where my passion for FND began.

Over a decade

Australia and the UK

Hospitals, private practice and community disability services.

2021

Specialising in the brain

Graduate Certificate of Neurological Rehabilitation, Edith Cowan University.

2022

Clinical radiology training

Brain Imaging and Brain Function for Rehabilitation Clinicians, with Ettie Ben-Shabbat.

December 2023

Opening The Brain Physio

I opened my own practice to give people with neurological conditions the time and understanding they deserve. It began as home-visiting neurological rehabilitation, and grew into a multidisciplinary therapy team supporting people across Perth.

2024

Focusing on FND

FND Boot Camp with Re-Active PT, Basic Bobath (IBITA), and Walk on the Ward with Me, a clinical radiology course with Dr Ettie Ben-Shabbat.

2026

Burnout, and a reset

By early 2026 I was burnt out. Long, complex recruitment processes and managing multiple staff had taken their toll, and I’d learnt which parts of the business drained my energy and which gave it back. I took May and June off to step back and rethink my direction, and made a tree change to beautiful southern WA. I realised I wanted the freedom to travel, and a way of working that supports my wellbeing, and that working online makes both possible. I came back part-time in July and started planning what came next.

October 2026

A new direction

I moved The Brain Physio in a new direction. I now work on my own, without a team, and focus on what I love most, which is an education-based approach to FND and brain health, by telehealth. I help people understand FND and their nervous system, and give them the skills to retrain it. Over my years in neurological rehabilitation I also kept seeing the same pattern, with people who hadn’t been able to look after their brain health before a neurological diagnosis. That’s why brain health and preventing neurological disease are now a big part of my work.

2026

Still learning

Let’s Talk FND, a six-week online course for health professionals, and an in-depth FND weekend course with Re-Active (in progress).

Why FND

“I developed my passion for FND on a stroke unit in 2015. So many people had been told nothing could be done, yet with the right understanding and a confident plan, they got better. Now I want everyone with FND to have that chance, and everyone to know how much of their brain health is in their hands.”

How I work

Understanding first

You'll leave each session knowing what's happening and why. Questions are always welcome.

The whole person

Your assessment looks at six areas that can affect your nervous system. These are physical, sensory, lifestyle, autonomic, motor control and psychosocial.

Working together

I work alongside your GP, neurologist and local team, and refer on when you need support outside my scope.

Why brain health matters

Much of it is in your hands

Many common neurological conditions are linked to things we can change. That’s why brain health sits at the heart of what I do.

45%

of dementia cases, including Alzheimer’s disease, could be prevented or delayed

By addressing 14 risk factors across a lifetime. Lancet Commission, 2024

80%

of strokes are preventable

More than 80%, according to the Stroke Foundation, 2025

30%

of Parkinson’s disease cases in men linked to preventable risk factors

23% in women. Payami et al., npj Parkinson’s Disease, 2023

What you need for telehealth
Sessions run on Microsoft Teams. The link is in your booking confirmation email, and you don't need a Microsoft account. Before your first appointment, please download the Microsoft Teams app and make sure your device is up to date (older devices that can't be updated often have camera or connection problems). Use a laptop rather than a phone, with a stable connection and space to move, and set it up to 4 metres away (for the physical assessment). For a physical assessment, it helps to have a second person with you if you can. Read the telehealth guide.
Cancellations
Please give at least 2 business days' notice to cancel or reschedule. For a Monday appointment, let us know by Thursday. Missed appointments are charged the full session fee. Read the full terms.
